Coarsely chop tomatoes using a food processor or blender. Set them aside.
Heat a medium-sized soup pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
Once heated, add the olive oil and swirl it around the pot. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until it becomes translucent.
Add the minced garlic and continue to sauté until it becomes fragrant, which should take about 30 seconds.
Pour in the chopped tomatoes and add the sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 20 minutes up to 1 hour, or until it thickens to your liking.
During the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves.
