Prepare a large, deep nonstick skillet or soup pot (12 in-diameter) by coating it with cooking spray. Then, set it over medium heat.
Add sausage to the skillet or pot. Break the sausage apart with a wooden spoon as you cook it. Continue cooking until it is no longer pink, which should take about 5 minutes.
Once the sausage is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl using a slotted spoon. Set it aside.
In the same skillet or pot, add oil and heat it over medium-high heat.
Add garlic to the skillet or pot. Cook and stir frequently until the garlic becomes fragrant, which should take about 30 seconds.
Add broccoli rabe and salt to the skillet or pot. Cover it and cook, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli rabe just starts to wilt, which should take about 3 minutes.
Remove the broccoli rabe from the skillet or pot and transfer it to the bowl with the sausage, using a slotted spoon.
Add pasta and broth to the skillet or pot. Bring it to a boil over high heat.
Cook the pasta uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 8 minutes.
Add the broccoli rabe and sausage to the skillet or pot. Stir and cook until the broccoli rabe is tender, the pasta is al dente, and the liquid has reduced to a saucy consistency. This should take about 2 minutes.
Remove the skillet or pot from the heat. Stir in 2 tablespoons of cheese.
Garnish with red pepper flakes (optional) and serve each portion sprinkled with ½ tablespoon of cheese.
