In a large microwave-safe mug or container, add the cocoa powder and crushed candy cane.
Pour in the hot water. Stir until smooth.
Microwave on High for 1 minute. Stir well.
Add the milk and vanilla extract.
Microwave for 1½ to 2 minutes until hot.
Add the sugar substitute. Stir until dissolved.
Top with whipped topping if using.
