Maple Roasted Sweet Potatoes are a good choice when you want a slightly sweet side dish without making a traditional sweet potato casserole.

Roasting brings out the natural sweetness of the potatoes, and a small amount of maple syrup gives the edges a little extra caramelization.

The cinnamon is noticeable but not overpowering, and the salt and pepper keep the potatoes from tasting like dessert.

You only need about 10 minutes to prepare everything. Toss the cubed sweet potatoes with the seasonings in a large mixing bowl, then spread them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

After about 30 minutes in the oven, the potatoes should be tender inside with lightly browned edges.

These are especially good for Thanksgiving and Christmas when you need another vegetable side dish that doesn’t require much attention. They’re also simple enough for an ordinary weeknight dinner.

Serve them with roasted turkey, baked chicken, pork chops, or ham. If you’re planning a holiday meal, you can peel and cube the sweet potatoes ahead of time to save a little preparation work.

Why You’ll Love This Maple Roasted Sweet Potatoes Recipe

Just Enough Maple Sweetness

Two tablespoons of maple syrup are enough to lightly coat two pounds of sweet potatoes. You still get the natural flavor of the potatoes without an overly sweet glaze.

A Good Alternative to Sweet Potato Casserole

If you prefer your sweet potatoes without marshmallows, brown sugar toppings, or a creamy filling, roasting is a good option. You get tender potatoes with browned edges and a little cinnamon.

Only 6 Ingredients

You don’t need a long grocery list for this recipe. Most of the ingredients are common pantry staples, so there’s a good chance you already have everything except the sweet potatoes.

Works for Holiday and Everyday Dinners

These roasted sweet potatoes are suitable for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but there’s no reason to save them for holidays. They go well with chicken, pork, turkey, and other simple main dishes.

Easy to Adjust the Seasoning

You can change the cinnamon or black pepper to suit the rest of your meal. A little less cinnamon gives the potatoes a more savory flavor, which may be preferable when serving them with heavily seasoned meat.

Ingredient Substitutions

Maple Syrup

Honey can replace the maple syrup in equal amounts. It will give the potatoes a slightly different sweetness and may brown more quickly. Keep in mind that honey is not vegan.

Olive Oil

Avocado oil or another neutral cooking oil can replace the olive oil. Use the same amount.

Ground Cinnamon

For a different fall flavor, use pumpkin pie spice instead of cinnamon. Start with ½ teaspoon since the spice blend has a stronger flavor.

Sweet Potatoes

Butternut squash can be used instead of sweet potatoes. Cut it into similar-sized cubes and check for tenderness near the end of roasting, since cooking times may vary.

Tips and Tricks

Cut evenly – Keep the sweet potato cubes close to the same size so they finish roasting at about the same time.
Don’t overcrowd the pan – Leave a little space between the cubes. Use two baking sheets if necessary to prevent steaming.
Watch the edges – Maple syrup can brown quickly at high temperatures. Check the potatoes during the last few minutes to prevent burning.
Use pure maple syrup – Pancake syrup is usually sweeter and has a different consistency. Pure maple syrup is the better choice for this recipe.
Prepare ahead – Peel and cube the sweet potatoes up to a day ahead. Keep them submerged in cold water in the refrigerator, then drain and dry thoroughly before seasoning.

Storing and Reheating

Refrigerator – Store leftover sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Freezer – Freeze cooled sweet potatoes in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. The texture may be softer after thawing.
Oven – Spread the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet and reheat at 375°F for 10 to 15 minutes, or until heated through.
Air Fryer – Reheat at 350°F for 4 to 6 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
Microwave – Place a serving in a microwave-safe dish and heat in 30-second intervals until hot. The potatoes will be softer than when reheated in the oven.
