Ingredient Substitutions
Explore different ingredients to adapt this recipe according to what’s available or to meet dietary needs.
Ground Beef
Ground Turkey or Chicken
Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option that still offers a satisfying texture.
Lentils
For a vegetarian version, lentils are a perfect substitute, maintaining the heartiness of the dish.
Tomato Sauce
Crushed Tomatoes
Opt for crushed tomatoes if you prefer a chunkier texture in your soup.
Tomato Paste and Water
Combine tomato paste with an equal amount of water to achieve a similar consistency to tomato sauce.
Dry Onion Soup Mix
Homemade Mix
Create your own mix with dried onion flakes, beef bouillon granules, onion powder, garlic powder, and a pinch of celery seed.
Chicken Broth
Vegetable Broth
Switch to vegetable broth to make this recipe vegetarian-friendly.
Beef Broth
Beef broth can be used for a richer flavor that complements the ground beef well.
Frozen Mixed Vegetables
Fresh Vegetables
Chop up fresh carrots, peas, corn, and green beans as a direct substitute for frozen vegetables.
Canned Vegetables
Use canned vegetables as an alternative, making sure to drain and rinse them first to reduce excess sodium.
Elbow Macaroni
Any Small Pasta
Shells or fusilli can be used instead of elbow macaroni without altering the texture of the soup significantly.
Rice
Consider using rice as a gluten-free alternative, though this may slightly change the cooking time of your soup.
Tips and Tricks
Browning the Beef
When browning the ground beef, ensure it is fully cooked and slightly caramelized for a deeper flavor. Drain any excess fat before adding it to the soup pot to avoid a greasy texture.
Enhancing Flavor
To boost the flavor, you can add minced garlic to the ground beef while browning. A teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce mixed into the beef also adds a savory depth.
Cooking the Pasta
To prevent the pasta from becoming too soft, add the elbow macaroni to the pot when the soup is already boiling. Monitor the cooking time closely and check for doneness to keep it al dente.
Vegetables
For more vibrant flavors and textures, consider adding some fresh vegetables along with the frozen ones. Chopped carrots, bell peppers, or fresh green beans can be excellent additions.
Seasoning
Taste the soup before serving and adjust the seasoning as needed. You may need to add salt, pepper, or even a dash of hot sauce if you like a bit of heat.
Thicker Soup
If you prefer a thicker soup, you can reduce the amount of water or let the soup simmer longer to reduce the liquid. Alternatively, mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with a bit of cold water and stir it into the soup to thicken.
Customizing the Recipe
Feel free to customize the recipe by using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef, or by adding different types of pasta or grains like barley or quinoa for variety.
How to Store and Reheat
Storing
To store the leftover soup, let it cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, this soup freezes beautifully. Pour cooled soup into freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags and freeze for up to 2-3 months. Just be sure to leave a little headspace in containers as the soup will expand when frozen
Reheating
To reheat, thaw the soup in the refrigerator overnight if it was frozen. Pour the soup into a saucepan and reheat on the stove over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it’s hot throughout. If the soup appears too thick after thawing, you can thin it by adding a little extra broth or water during reheating. If you’re in a hurry, you can also microwave individual servings in a microwave-safe dish, covered with a microwave-safe lid or paper towel, stirring periodically until heated through.
