Tips and Tricks
Choosing Ingredients:
Hot Dogs: Opt for turkey or chicken hot dogs for a lighter option. For vegetarians, there are many plant-based hot dogs that also grill well and taste great in a Chicago-style setup.
Buns: Look for whole grain or whole wheat options if you want to add more fiber to your meal. Gluten-free buns are available for those with dietary restrictions.
Preparation Tips:
Grilling: To avoid burning the hot dogs, keep the grill at medium heat and turn them frequently. If using a grill pan, a light spray of oil can help prevent sticking and help achieve an even char.
Toasting Buns: Lightly buttering the buns before grilling can add a nice flavor and help prevent them from getting soggy from the toppings.
Topping Substitutions:
Mustard and Relish: If you’re not a fan of mustard, consider using a light spread of hummus or avocado for creaminess. If sweet relish isn’t your thing, try chopping up some fresh cucumbers for a crunchy, less sweet alternative.
Onions: For a milder flavor, consider using green onions or soaking the chopped onions in cold water for about 10 minutes before using them to reduce their intensity.
