  • Coarsely chop tomatoes using a food processor or blender. Set them aside.
  • Heat a medium-sized soup pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  • Once heated, add the olive oil and swirl it around the pot. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until it becomes translucent.
  • Add the minced garlic and continue to sauté until it becomes fragrant, which should take about 30 seconds.
  • Pour in the chopped tomatoes and add the sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 20 minutes up to 1 hour, or until it thickens to your liking.
  • During the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves.
