Tips and Tricks
Sesame Seeds
Toast the sesame seeds carefully, stirring continuously to avoid burning. Toasted seeds have a richer, nuttier flavor.
Marinade
Combine the maple syrup, soy sauce, sherry, water, five-spice powder, and ginger well to ensure a consistent flavor. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Chicken
Cut the chicken into uniform strips for even cooking. This ensures all pieces cook at the same rate.
Flour Mixture
Use a large shallow dish for the flour mixture. This makes it easier to coat the chicken evenly and shake off the excess flour.
Heating Oil
Heat the peanut oil until it’s hot but not smoking. This helps achieve a good sear on the chicken without burning.
Cooking Chicken
Cook the chicken in batches if necessary. Overcrowding the pan can lower the temperature and cause the chicken to steam rather than brown.
Sauce
Add the sauce mixture to the chicken and cook until it thickens and almost evaporates. This ensures the chicken is well-coated with the flavorful sauce.
Coating with Sesame Seeds
Use tongs to handle the chicken strips and lightly press them into the toasted sesame seeds. This helps the seeds stick better and creates an even coating.
Serving
Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh green onions or cilantro for added freshness and color.
Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat gently on the stovetop to maintain the texture and flavor.
