Tips and Tricks
Preparing the Peaches
Choose ripe but firm peaches for the best texture and flavor. If the skins are tough, you can peel them, although it’s not necessary.
Mixing the Peaches
Gently mix the peaches with the brown sugar to avoid breaking the slices. Allowing the mixture to sit for a few minutes helps the sugar dissolve and blend with the fruit juices.
Sifting Dry Ingredients
Sift the dry ingredients to ensure even distribution of the cinnamon and salt, which helps create a consistent flavor in the crumble topping.
Combining the Topping
Using your fingers to combine the egg white with the dry ingredients helps create a crumbly texture. This step is crucial for a nice, crunchy topping.
Drizzling Butter
Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the crumble to ensure all the topping gets a buttery flavor and crisps up nicely.
Baking Time
Keep an eye on the crumble during the last few minutes of baking. It should be golden and bubbling. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
Serving Suggestions
Serve the peach crumble warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. The contrast of the warm crumble and the cool topping is delightful.
Storing Leftovers
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes or until warmed through.
Adding Extra Flavor
For a flavor twist, you can add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of vanilla extract to the peach mixture. Adding oats to the crumble topping can also provide a different texture and flavor.
Making Ahead
You can prepare the crumble ahead of time by assembling the peach mixture and topping separately. Store them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake. This allows you to enjoy fresh, warm peach crumble without the prep work.
