Tips and Tricks
Making the Sauce
When combining the flour and milk, whisk constantly to prevent lumps from forming. This ensures a smooth and creamy sauce.
Thickening the Sauce
If the sauce isn’t thickening as desired, continue to cook it a bit longer, stirring frequently. It will thicken more as it cools slightly.
Adding Cheese
Gradually add the cheddar cheese to the sauce while stirring continuously. This helps the cheese melt evenly and prevents clumping.
Adjusting Spice Level
For a milder sauce, reduce the amount of hot pepper sauce or use a milder mustard. For more heat, increase the hot pepper sauce or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Toasting Bread
For extra crunch, lightly brush the bread slices with olive oil before toasting. This adds flavor and a nice golden color.
Layering the Sandwich
When assembling the sandwich, ensure the tomato slices are evenly spread over the bread. This prevents the bread from becoming soggy.
Broiling
Keep a close eye on the sandwiches while broiling. The sauce can brown quickly, so check frequently to avoid burning.
Serving Suggestions
Serve the sandwiches with a side salad or a bowl of soup for a complete meal. They also pair well with a light coleslaw or steamed vegetables.
Storing Leftovers
If you have leftovers, store the components separately: keep the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently on the stove. Assemble fresh sandwiches when ready to eat to maintain the best texture.
Bacon Tips
For perfectly crisp turkey bacon, cook it on a baking sheet in the oven. This ensures even cooking and less mess compared to stovetop cooking.
