  • Set up the oven racks by placing one in the lower third of the oven and the other in the upper third.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour and cocoa. Mix well and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, add the sugar, applesauce, oil, vanilla, and egg.
  • Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the mixture until smooth for about 1 minute.
  • Add the flour mixture to the large bowl and stir until fully combined.
  • Using a level tablespoon, scoop the dough and roll it into balls.
  • Arrange 12 dough balls on each baking sheet.
  • Bake the cookies at 350°F until set for 8 to 10 minutes, rotating the baking sheets halfway through.
  • After removing the baking sheets from the oven, allow the cookies to cool for 2 minutes on the pans.
  • Transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Repeat the baking process with the remaining dough.
  • Sprinkle the cookies with powdered sugar.
