Tips and Tricks
Preparing the Tomatoes
For a smoother sauce, break up the whole peeled tomatoes with your hands or a masher before adding them to the Dutch oven. If you prefer a chunkier sauce, leave some larger pieces intact.
Enhancing Flavor
To deepen the flavor of your sauce, add a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar when you add the tomatoes and tomato paste. This adds a rich, tangy dimension to the sauce.
Cooking Onions and Garlic
Be careful not to burn the garlic while cooking it with the onions. Burnt garlic can give a bitter taste to the sauce. Cook on medium heat and stir frequently.
Seasoning
Start with a moderate amount of salt and pepper, then adjust to taste as the sauce simmers. You can also add a pinch of sugar if the tomatoes are too acidic.
Simmering for Flavor
Letting the sauce simmer for the full 25 minutes allows the flavors to meld together. If you have more time, letting it simmer longer can enhance the flavors even further.
Using Fresh Herbs
For added freshness, stir in some chopped fresh basil or parsley just before serving. Fresh herbs brighten up the sauce and add a lovely aroma.
Storing and Freezing
Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. This sauce also freezes well; portion it into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
Serving Suggestions
This versatile tomato sauce can be used on pasta, as a base for pizza, or in dishes like lasagna or stuffed peppers. It’s also a great dipping sauce for breadsticks or garlic bread.
Blending for Smoothness
If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce to your desired consistency. You can also transfer it to a regular blender in batches, but be careful with the hot liquid.
Adding Extra Vegetables
For a more robust sauce, consider adding other vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or celery when sautéing the onions and garlic. This can add more depth and nutrition to your sauce.
