Tips and Tricks
Choosing the Right Apples
For the best results, choose apples that are firm, like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These hold up well during cooking and won’t turn mushy in the air fryer.
Preventing Apples from Tipping
If your apples don’t stand up straight, slice a small piece off the bottom to level them. This will keep them stable while they cook.
Customize the Filling
Feel free to swap out the raisins for dried cranberries or the walnuts for pecans if you prefer. You can also add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger for extra fall flavor.
Line Your Air Fryer
To make cleanup easier, line the bottom of your air fryer basket with parchment paper or foil. This will catch any filling that may fall out during cooking.
Ingredient Substitutions
Apples
If you don’t have small apples, you can use medium or large ones. Just adjust the filling amount and cooking time accordingly.
Rolled Oats
Quick oats can be used if you don’t have old-fashioned rolled oats. They may result in a slightly different texture, but they’ll still work.
Raisins
Dried cranberries, chopped dates, or even dried apricots can be used in place of raisins for a similar sweet and chewy texture.
Walnuts
If you’re out of walnuts, pecans or almonds make great substitutes. You can also leave out the nuts entirely if needed.
Brown Sugar
White sugar or coconut sugar can replace brown sugar, though you may lose a bit of that rich, molasses flavor.
Butter
Melted coconut oil or even olive oil can be used instead of butter if you’re out or want a dairy-free option.
How to Store and Reheat
To store leftover baked apples, place them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
To reheat, simply place the apples in the microwave for 30-45 seconds or reheat in the air fryer at 300°F for 5-7 minutes until warmed through. Avoid overcooking to prevent the apples from becoming too soft.
Freezing isn’t recommended for this recipe as the apples may lose their texture when thawed.
